My name is Lyle Breda and I have a vision for a greater Africa, for us and for generations to come. I am 24 years old and a student at the University of the Western Cape, majoring in Business administration and political studies. I envision a United States of Africa, but before this vision can be realised there are a plethora of gaps that need to be filled, veils of social ignorance that need to be broken, and an understanding of our fellow Africans. I am currently in the third month of my travels, which started in Egypt, and at the moment I find myself in a village in Moshi Kilimanjaro, in Tanzania, working with an NGO start-up building a school. I sought out to observe and understand cultural and societal norms, the difference in infrastructure and political ideologies, and how we can overcome these differences in order to work together and cooperate on a united front. This comes in various forms with education being the primary objective, teaching children and then adults on the value of Pan Africanism, and to truly understand the plight of our brothers and sisters across borders.
This can lead to a stifling of xenophobia and increased business and educational interaction between Africans. This is the main goal, however, the plan is to implement these ideas by publishing either a book or a series of booklets detailing how we can achieve unity, from a community level to a provincial and national level, and ultimately to a continental front, going on a school tour upon my return doing talks at primary and high schools detailing my travels and the ideas outlined above, to show people that there is always hope, and to work on community and social cohesion projects with creative, and other start-ups in and around Cape Town and South Africa.
As interesting and insightful as this journey has been, financial help is a fundamental part of getting around and forms a critical part of me implementing all that I seek to implement and to continue this journey.
