My name is Celesté Bronkhorst. My 12-year-old cat was diagnosed with severe pancreatitis mid-March. He was admitted to hospital with intensive 24 hour care and monitoring for more than a week, which included a drip with pain (morphine) and anti-nausea meds. The vet inserted a feeding tube through his nose to enable him to get some food into his system to avoid fatty liver disease which is fatal. He stressed a lot about the feeding tube and the feedings itself and somehow managed to bite off a piece of the tube which went straight down his throat into his intestines. On top of his pancreatitis, they had to operate to remove the piece of the tube before it damaged some organs and the risk was 50/50 that he would survive the anaesthetic, but he did.
At the same time, they took biopsies of his pancreas, liver and gallbladder, to check for cancer, as his red blood cell count was very low, but all tests came back clean. They are still doing tests to figure out the cause of the low red blood cell count, and in the meantime, the vet bills are piling up. The vet bill has added up to R25 000 already. I can arrange a payment plan with the vet for six months, but I cannot afford the monthly instalments, as I am looking after my bedridden mother as well, which is also a huge expense for.
