Dejané - Transverse myelitis

Dejané – TRANSVERSE MYELITIS – GOAL R50000

R0 of R50 000 raised

Dejané diagnosed with Transverse myelitis.
Dejane complained of back pain on the evening of 28 October 2022, went to take a shower and after that she could no longer walk.  We took her to Medi Clinic in George. After a few tests, X-rays, lumber punch and MRI scan she was first diagnosed with Gillian Barre and got treatment.  Her doctor was concerned, and they did a second MRI scan which confirmed she have Transverse Myelitis.  She was transferred to Aurora Hospital (rehabilitation centre) on the 24 of November 2022. On the 18th of January 2023 she went home for the first time in 12 weeks.
Dejane was discharged from Aurora Hospital on the 18th of January 2023. Unfortunately, no movement in legs but her progress was excellent.  Back in George she will still have to get physio and occupational therapy until there is movement.  We still need a few things for her at home and her recovery is a long road.  Dejane is still paralysed from the hips down and uses diapers and self-catheterization.  She will start with home schooling at this stage. We are raising funds to make the road ahead a little easier for her to buy all the equipment (Shower bench, shower grab rails, toilet rails, advance tube mattress- to help prevent bed sores and help with circulation, self-propelled commode, toilet seat raiser, etc.)  we need for Dejane and to pay the bills that is not covered by medical aid.
She is currently paralyzed from the hips down at this stage. She needs some equipment at home as medical aid do not cover everything. She still needs to get physio and occupational therapy as well and medical aid doesn’t cover it.  She is currently using nappies. Her road to recovery is long and we don’t know if she will recover fully until there is movement in legs.
What is Transvers Myelitis? Transverse Myelitis is an inflammation of both sides of one section of the spinal cord. This neurological disorder often damages the insulating material covering nerve cell fibbers (myelin).  Transverse Myelitis interrupts the messages that the spinal cord nerves send throughout the body.  TM is a rare but very serious medical condition which can have a devastating effect on one’s life.  Early diagnosis and correct treatment offer the best chance of recovery.

Most people recover for TM within 3 months after the condition happens.  For some, healing may take months to years.  While some people recover from the inflammation with little or no lasting complications, others recover with moderate or severe disabilities.

We just want to ask everyone to keep Dejane in your prayers and thank everyone who supports us in this difficult time.
