I am writing this to ask you to assist me with funding as I have been invited to attend the international scholar laureate program, delegation of medicine and science in Australia, based on my exemplary academic performance.
I was greatly inspired by my uncle who is a medical doctor. However, I never thought I was smart enough to study medicine, let alone afford the tuition. I was always a hard-working student and my biology teacher always said I would be a doctor one day, but I never put it in my head, because I never thought it would be possible. My uncle would always invite me to his surgery to see how he treats people and how rewarding it is to see the people you have helped happy and feeling much better. I put the idea of becoming a doctor on the back burner, but when I lost my father due to heart problems, the trauma and pain I went through was unbearable and it made me realize that I don’t ever want any other family to suffer the loss of losing a husband and a father due to lack of doctors in public hospitals like mine did.
The shortage of doctors in our public hospitals, especially in the deep rural areas, has led to the increase in the number of broken homes and so many deaths of family members who were the breadwinners, leaving more people in poverty. I want to be a medical doctor so I can contribute towards breaking this cycle, to improve the health of people and mostly to inspire young aspiring doctors that it can be done, your past and where you come from should never stop one from dreaming big.
I am currently a third year medical student at the University of Pretoria, and being able to attend this program would not only benefit me, but it would also benefit the society and my peers. It would award me the opportunity to expand the knowledge I have about my field, it would also inspire me to work harder as such opportunities are rewarded to hardworking deserving people. I believe it would stir up a drive in me to work on research on how we can improve the health system in South Africa by trying to implement everything I would have learned on this program. It would also make me a better and advanced doctor as I would have learned about the health system in a more developed country and how they incorporate the public and private sectors, which is one of the downfalls in the health structure in South Africa.
Unfortunately, without your financial assistance, this is just a dream. The tuition for the trip is $3,495, excluding travel costs, which amounts to $5608.20 with transport and other costs included.
Your contribution will be highly appreciated
