A local Hermanus grade 9 pupil, Inga Mfundisi, started an enthusiastic and progressive chess club 2 years ago. The Zwelihle Chess Club. She teaches and coaches these children the game of chess and she keeps creating winners. It’s a rare hobby in the township.
When she started the club parents were pleased with the results as they could see their children’s school marks changing for the better.
The team of 7 has been excited and practicing for the South African Youth Chess Championship in Johannesburg between the 2nd and 12th of January. This dream is now getting stressful and bleak for her financial support system.
After meeting her mother who has been trying to raise funds it pained me that I couldn’t simply sign her a cheque to support her daughter’s dream and team. But I have to do something for this mother who cares so much about her child’s dream. We do not get this often in black communities.
Though I don’t know much about chess, I know this team deserves all the help they can get.
