The Absa Cape Epic is an annual mountain bike stage race held in the Western Cape, South Africa. It has been accredited as hors categorie (beyond categorisation) by the Union Cycliste Internationale. First staged in 2004, the race typically covers more than 700 kilometers (435 miles) and lasts eight days – a prologue and seven stages.
The Absa Cape Epic attracts elite professional mountain bikers from around the world, who compete in teams of two. To qualify for a finish, teams have to stay together for the duration of the race. The course changes every year, but the race has always taken place in the Western Cape. The Absa Cape Epic was described by Bart Brentjens, 1996 Olympic gold medalist in mountain biking and a former Absa Cape Epic winner, as the “Tour de France of mountain biking”.
Angelo Casu and Johan Fourie have once again teamed up for the 2018 edition and aim to raise some much needed funds for StreetSmart South Africa, having raised R38,000 for StreetSmart in 2017. The Team will be sponsored by Morgenster Boutique Hotel and Spa, a brand new 5* Hotel development due to open late in 2018 and set in the historic Morgenster Wine and Olive Estate in Somerset West
Johan, General Manager at Doolhof Wine Estate is an experienced mountain biker having successfully completed 6 Absa Cape Epic and, therefore, is a member of the elite Amamubesi Club, riders who have completed 3 or more Absa Cape Epics.
Angelo, the owner of the Grand Dédale Country House and consultant for Morgenster Boutique Hotel and Spa, will be riding his third Absa Cape Epic with a clear aim to raise enough funds for the charity and get a step closer to becoming an Amamubesi Club member by completing his third Cape Epic in 2018.
The Team goal is to cross the finish line at Val de Vie and raise R100 per every kilometer of the 658 ridden and R5 for every meter of the 13,530 that awaits them. We ask YOU to make our goal a reality and help us enrich the lives of many disadvantaged kids!
