Our junior school debating team, which started in 2017 for the first time, got involved with the World Scholars cup program from the US. In 2017 only a group of grade 8 girls made up our entire team. They have fantastic personalities and budding intellectuals. I believe that this group has great potential to make an astounding impact during their generation. 5 teams qualified from the first round to the second round and one team qualified to go to the states for the league of champions.
This is a very high-end event and our students do not fall into this same social-economic bracket. We could only afford to attend the second round because I spotted a miscommunication between myself and the organizers regarding the currency of the entry fees and they allowed our teams to take part anyway. We would need to enter the first and second rounds here in Cape Town in 2018, but then also, should we qualify, we would need to enter the third round and fly to the states and cover accommodation too.
