My name is Lee-Ann Olwage and I am a social documentary photographer from Cape Town, South Africa. I have been selected to showcase my work at Head On Photo Festival 2019 in Sydney, Australia, which will be taking place from 4-19 May 2019. My photographic project titled ”The Queens of Cape Town” will be part of a group exhibition at the festival next year. The project is focussed on looking at the importance of safe spaces where queer bodies are celebrated, and the role of drag as activism in the LGBTQ community.
As artists and photographers, we have the opportunity to tell stories that matter and re-frame the world to change preconceived notions, stereotypes and prejudices. I aim to create thought-provoking work that sheds light on difficult issues and promotes social change. To be invited to exhibit at Head On Photo Festival is a great honour and it will give me the opportunity to grow as an artist and to showcase my work to an international audience. It will also create the opportunity to tell the universal narrative of gender issues within a South Africa context, creating an interesting background as a key player in the fight for human rights globally.
Your contributions towards helping me get to this event would be greatly appreciated.
Thanking you in advance for your generosity and support.
