Franschhoek, as the rest of our country, has not escaped the pervasive attacks on women and children. We are devastated by reports in media, highlighting the increased brutal attacks and acts of femicide on the most vulnerable members of society.
We have identified a property for the purpose of providing safe accommodation which we applied or at the Municipal board. It is our intention to provide a range of services to an average of 12 women and children on a monthly basis. The safe house will offer a 24-hour crisis response to abused women and their children and would be able to provide safe accommodation, counselling and referrals to appropriate support services.
Women and their children go to a place of refuge, usually in an emergency because of the abuse they have suffered at home. Often, they have nothing with them except the clothes they are wearing and need to be supplied with toiletries, clothing and food. We are therefore reliant on donations to provide the women and children with their immediate needs.
Because of the abuse, the women experience low self-esteem and little sense of self-worth. The children, who have usually witnessed their mother’s abuse and in many cases, been abused themselves, often physically and sexually, suffer from a range of emotional and behavioural problems.
Though their stay in the shelter may not be long (average 3 – 4 months), it is important that our clients begin to feel safe and supported enough to regain a sense of dignity and value. We try to help them in this by offering programmes such as counselling, life skills training, parenting skills, legal advice & intervention, job skills and empowerment training.
While we endeavour to secure government and grant funding, it is not sufficient to meet all our needs. Once the house is secured we’ll financial assistance to refurbish the house. We ask therefore, whether you would consider a donation (either as a once-off donation, or on an ongoing basis) to La Refuge safe house and help support us in this work.
