R0 of R15 000 raised

On a very rainy day in February, a moving white creature was spotted cowering under a tree trying to shelter from the storm. On closer inspection, it was discovered to be a young pup, soaking wet, terribly thin and covered in ticks and fleas. She was also lame and did not put her left back leg down at all. Willow appears to be golden retriever x and we strongly suspect that she was dumped by an unscrupulous back yard breeder because she was lame.

We agreed to foster this little girl and named her Willow. Our intention was to clean her up, get her dewormed and rid of all the parasites, get her some treatment for her injured leg and then find a loving forever home.

We were in for a shock.  The lameness in Willow’s leg was caused by a massive abscess – a condition known as “joint-ill” in which a bacterial infection travels from the umbilical cord of the newborn pup down into a joint and form an abscess. It is likely that Willow had been lame from the time she could walk.

Willow had to undergo surgery to clean up her leg joint. She did well and was discharged after 6 days in the hospital, but unfortunately developed Parvo Virus and was readmitted. Willow is a real fighter though, and although painfully thin and undernourished, she survived.

Unfortunately, Willow has ongoing challenges. The cartilage in her knee is slightly damaged from the infection and her muscles are underdeveloped. She requires physiotherapy and laser treatment, particularly as she is a large breed dog and neglecting her legs now will result in serious problems as she grows. Willow also appears to have intestinal issues that are unresolved and has required further admission to hospital.

Willow is a magnificent pup, but due to her medical issues, we have not been able to put her up for adoption. We have started her at puppy school as she’s as bright as a button. Learning so fast and willing to please. Unfortunately, caring for Willow is way beyond our budget and as much as we believe this beautiful dog deserves absolutely the best chance at a full and healthy life, we are financially limited in what we can do for her.

We would greatly appreciate assistance to help rehabilitate this pup.

Thanking you in advance for your contributions.
