In March 2019, a Grade 12 learner at Parktown Boys’ High School, Callan Barrell was selected to attend the Gauteng Provincial Trails for the Gauteng Schools Rowing Federation and went on to train with the Provincial squads.
In May 2019 Callan was awarded his Gauteng Provincial Colours and went on to compete at the SA National Trials.
Through his unwavering dedication and incomparable efforts, Callan has been selected to represent the South African Schools Rowing side to compete in the Junior World Championships in Tokyo, Japan in August 2019! This is the first time in 11 years that one of our oarsmen has accomplished this – the last being Lawrence Brittain (Summer Olympics Silver Medalist 2016).
Callan has also received top honours at the School for Rowing by being awarded Full Colours in the sport in both March 2018 and March 2019 as well as being awarded “The Blade” Trophy for the quickest ergo times in both years.
As is in the case with many of our top achieving sportsmen, the financial burden of competing at either Provincial or National level is insurmountable at times and we as a School wish to encourage our athletes from all sporting codes to reach for ever greater heights without the further distraction of financial concerns, so this will be an on-going campaign even though our immediate concern is assisting Callan get to Tokyo.
Any funds received in excess of the financial assistance required for Callan, will be used towards assisting our athletes in whichever manner possible in reaching for their dreams.
Every little bit will help!
We thank you in advance for taking a specific interest in this young mans’ journey to achieving great heights in Rowing for his country and for further supporting our greater School Community in aide of young sportsmen across all Sporting Codes at Parktown Boys’ High School.
