Shannon Abrahams is a 43 year old single mom who lost her leg due to diabetes . Her leg was amputated just above the knee in 2018. She is also looking after her dad who is bedridden due to a stroke. She is her father’s only daughter and only relative that can look after him. She has tried putting her dad in an old age home since she lost her leg , since she cant look after him ,but due to the fact that she is unemployed she can’t afford a nurse or and good Old age home that can look after him. Since, her dad is bedridden he needs to go for Physio but have missed a lot of appointments as Shannon could not take him. She has to depend on her children when they get back from school to help take care of him or ask a neighbour if they are home.
Getting around is a big problem since she lives on the 3rd floor with her 4 children and father in a 2 bedroom flat in Zonnebloem, Cape Town . Since she is renting her flat from the municipality she has asked them over the years for a flat on the first floor but to no avial. It gets very difficult for her to move up the stairs as it can get dangerous especially when it gets wet as there is no lift in the building block. She has to slide down the stairs or crawl back up if she needs to go anywhere or ask one of the neighbours for help if they are around to take her wheelchair down or bring it back up . Since her children is still small and attending school they would love to do normal stuff with her like they used to do before her leg was amputated.
To make her mobile and move easier and take care after her family she would need to get a prosthetic leg that would cost R90 000. Since she is unemployed and she cant afford to buy a prosthetic leg she would have to raise the funds herself.
With a prosthetic leg she can look after her family and move easily up and down the stairs of her building block and even take her dad to physiotherapy . She would need the funds as soon as possible to start the process and help her children that is still in school and do simple tasks at home as she misses it and of cause look after her dad.
