The Valley primary farm school is an under-resourced school serving the children of farmworkers in the Durbanville area on the outskirts of Cape Town, South Africa. The school is on the Altydgedact farm, established in 1698
Project Mantis & Deep End Skateparks are assisting the school governing body to better serve the needs of the children attending the valley primary school by developing a green, safe zone for “ envirotainment “ at the school to improve the quality of the children’s learning & living. Currently, the school has no facilities for the physical education of approximately 160 so-called coloured children attending the school.
Project mantis & partners are creating an outside activity zone that combines having fun with environmental learning with physical activities & sports. This will contribute to the holistic development of these young people by providing a space to let off steam, learn social skills, develop life skills & their physical capacity.
This will include the following components:
- An outside classroom where workshops on the environment, growing food & medicinal plants & youth development can be held.
- A school permaculture (organic) garden for practical learning & that will provide needed remedies & vegetables for the school kitchen – many of the children are malnourished due to poor wages & the precarious circumstances of farm workers.
- A mini –skate park & BMX track where skateboarding & BMX clinics will be held.
- Classes to introduce the children to their indigenous but marginalized Khoesan languages & heritage.
Project Mantis is looking for in-kind donations of materials to build the infrastructure & some funds for smaller items. We hope that with your help we can raise R25 000.00 to kick start this project.
The funds will be used for the following:
- Building soccer/hockey goal poles
- Adding a netball pole and hoop on the netball court
- Building rails for the school staircases
- Planting grass on the soccer field
- Compactor rental to compact the running track
- Gardening tools to maintain the green zone
- Gardening tools for school children
- Raw, organic materials for garden beds per van load
- Organic Seeds
- Seed trays
- Petrol
- Printing
- Lime to mark out skate park & BMX track area.
