It is not my intention to bombard you with this sentimental / emotional email, nor do I intend to hide from the fact that when I came to UCT, everyone, including myself, had high hopes for my academic and holistic success, purely because of my academic background and my continued contribution to the learning and tutoring of unprivileged schools.
I come from a family where there are no parents, with 5 siblings. My mom passed away when I was 10 years old, and my father was imprisoned at the same time, I’ve never made contact with him afterwards. Shortly after seeing my circumstances turn out the way, I’ve explained above, I didn’t let it deter me from pursuing my dream of making something out of nothing for myself. Hence, I applied and got accepted to UCT. The problem though, has however been finances. Ever since I arrived, I have struggled to elicit financial support. This caused me significant stress. Stress that I’ve tried to curtail through being heavily involved in volunteer work to assist with subjects such mathematics and physics to unprivileged high schools who need it and employment to bolster my resume in order to make my CV and my character attractable to potential donors.
During my degree I became diagnosed with AVNRT, a heart condition that meant I had to reduce the pace of my degree. I was very eager to finally complete my studies, but unfortunately my AVNRT became severe and had to have an emergency heart operation in the form of a cardiac ablation procedure. Unfortunately, the operation was not successful, and I could not finish the rest of the year. I, however, managed to pass all my courses that were accommodating of my circumstances, and I have kept the same momentum in every aspect of my life regardless of my ongoing medical complications.
I set out the above, as I started my explanation above, not to make this seem sentimental, but to say that I have sincerely been going through a lot these three years, however, just as my life journey, I believe this past two years have equipped me to be mentally strong and have readied me to vigorously pursue my dream of being a Civil Engineer. But all this cannot be achieved if I don’t have financial support to register. I appeal to you to consider helping me register for 2023 with financial assistance of any amount and assist me to continue fighting for my degree.
