Onkarabile Mmamorobela is a 7-year-old girl from Hammanskraal, North of Pretoria. She was born normal, but diagnosed with TB at the age of 6 months at Jubilee Hospital and then later diagnosed with chronic lung disease when she turned 3. She was diagnosed with a rare lung disease where they found holes in her lung which requires a lung transplant at a certain point.
She was then transferred to Steve Biko Hospital where she was put permanently on Oxygen to help her survive until the age of 6 years. Onkarabile remained homebound until a good Samaritan bought her a portable oxygen concentrator so she can be able to go to school or go outside for fresh air like other normal kids.
In December 2017, the same donor paid for her to see a pulmonologist at the Sunninghill Hospital, where it was discovered that her lungs are squashing her heart, due to her small body weight, which caused more need for oxygen. She was then put on treatment immediately until they did the first procedure from which she was fine until the 04th February 2019.
On the 04th February, Onkarabile suffered a cardiac arrest, which saw her being rushed to the theatre, then the ICU. The cost implications all depend on the sponsor, as her mother is not working and cannot afford to pay any amount at all. The costs now stand at R135 000 and that is only for ICU, and I am not even speaking about the bills that still need to come in for the tests and doctors who are saving her life.
