Our amazing and usually joyful domestic worker, Nox, arrived at work the other day very distressed. Every year, she saves up the whole year to participate in an annual ‘stokvel’ where women from the community pool their earnings to buy bulk food supplies, in order to be able to afford to feed their families for the coming year. When the “stokvel” shopping is done, then there are very little groceries she needs to buy for 6 months.
In tears, and visibly traumatised, Nox described to me how this year’s “stokvel” meeting ended in disaster. One of the women had tipped off a group of criminals who stormed into the meeting, with guns and stole everything. Over R50 000 in total was lost, meaning that all the women, including Nox, each lost around R5 000 towards feeding their family.
Nox and her husband recently had another baby and things are already very tight financially. We would like to assist them with being able to purchase maize meal, flour, sugar, tea, canned foods etc.
The stress of the theft has impacted both Nox and her husband, who was traumatised to the point of not being able to go to work and need to get medication (further expense). We would be so grateful for any help in aiding this beautiful, honest, hardworking family whom we care about deeply.
